Men's Health Awareness Month
This Week's Focus: Prevention is Power
As June comes to a close, I want to leave you with one of the most important messages of all: your health is not just about reacting to problems, it’s about preventing them before they start.
This month, we've discussed the power of your inner voice, the importance of brotherhood and connection, and the courage it takes to break the silence around mental health. This week, let’s focus on the daily habits and choices that can significantly impact your future self.
Why Prevention Matters:
Most chronic health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers, are mostly preventable through the right habits and screenings. People who prioritize regular check-ups, healthy eating, physical activity, and adequate sleep are less likely to experience serious illness and more likely to live a longer, healthier life.
But here’s the thing: men are statistically less likely than women to get preventive care or seek help early. That’s why this message matters to everyone, because the people who love you want you around for the long haul.
Preventive Screenings: What to Ask About at Your Next Checkup:
No matter your age or gender, regular checkups are among the best ways to detect issues early and maintain your health. Here are the key topics to review with your healthcare provider each year:
- Blood pressure: High blood pressure usually has no symptoms but is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Have it checked at least once a year.
- Body weight and BMI: Tracking your weight and BMI can help you and your healthcare provider identify changes that might indicate health risks.
- Cholesterol and blood sugar levels are particularly important if you have a family history, are over 30, or have other risk factors. Your provider will advise you on how often to get these checked.
Cancer screenings:
- Men: Testicular health self-exams start as early as 15. Prostate and colorectal cancer screening starts at age 45, and skin checks for unusual moles or spots.
- Women: Cervical cancer screening with Pap smear (or HPV test) every 3 years starting at age 21. Clinical breast exams and mammograms beginning at age 40 or earlier if there's increased risk, and colorectal cancer screening starting at age 45.
- Diabetes screening: Especially if you have risk factors such as family history, high blood pressure, or are over age 40.
- Vision and hearing: Regular checks can catch changes early.
A Note on Supplements and Multivitamins:
Supplements and multivitamins are everywhere. Nearly one in three adults in the U.S. takes them, aiming to boost health, fill nutritional gaps, or prevent disease. However, not all supplements are equal, and the science clearly shows: quality matters.
Peer-reviewed research indicates that while a standard daily multivitamin is generally safe and may benefit those with specific deficiencies or limited diets, most studies find little or no benefit in preventing heart disease, cancer, or overall mortality in healthy adults. However, some evidence suggests multivitamins may support memory, slow cognitive decline in older adults, and help reduce micronutrient deficiencies.
The real risk comes from low-quality or unregulated supplements, which may contain inaccurate dosages, unwanted fillers, or even harmful contaminants. Some supplements have even sent people to the emergency room because of toxicity or allergic reactions.
The bottom line:
- Supplements can help some people, especially if their diet is lacking or they have higher needs.
- Select products from trusted brands that are clear about their ingredients and quality checks.
- Avoid megadoses or “miracle” claims and always consult your healthcare provider before starting a new supplement, especially if you take medications or have health conditions.
